The suppliers must give bills/invoices/receipts etc. stating Tor/Tor steel only and TorsteeVCTD. The latter is an indication that Torsteel reinforcing steel bars are drawn using some percentage of lower quality CTD steel bars which are generally rolled from ingots produced in Induction Furnace. The Induction Furnace do not have the facility to refine the chemical composition of the scrap steel melted by it.
Mixing of Different Types of Steel
There is a tendency or need to mix up reinforcement of different grades in the same member or in the structures in different members, such a columns, beams and slabs. For example, main reinforcement in columns can be of one grade whereas stirrups could be of other grade. This is in order as far as technical provisions for safe structural designs are concerned. However, the electro-chemical potential of reinforcement would vary from grade to grade of reinforcement and this can initiate corrosion. This particular factor is not yet fully understcn3d and cannot be ignored. Durability provisions have not only considered strengths but have also indicated the need for matching material properties. Therefore there is a need to safeguard when two or more grades/types of reinforcement steels are used in one member.
