As the saying goes, "Prevention is better than cure", this is so with Civil Engineering Structures too. It is wise to ensure that corrosion resistance is built during the design/construction stage itself, instead of attending to its mal-effects at a later stage by adopting time consuming/ expensive methods.
Objectives
At the end of this unit, you should be able to:
- know the various ways of dealing with the corrosion problem,
- understand the Coatings and protective layers,
- analyse Design and construction practices which Maximilian the protection afforded by the Portland cement concrete,
- adopt Treatments which penetrate or are applied on the surface (of the reinforced concrete member) to exclude chloride ion from the concrete, and
- apply the Techniques which prevent corrosion of the reinforcement directly.
