Concrete is the most widely used construction material in the world. Its popularity as a construction material is due to its cheapness, durability, insulation property, thermal property and ability to be moulded into many shapes. The raw materials for concrete are plentiful and widespread and as such it is not likely to be replaced by any other alternate building material. In India the outlay of construction, accounts for as much as 50% of plan outlay. Out of this, the cost of concrete will come to about 50% of total construction cost. It is therefore worthwhile to give enough importance to concrete making practices. It is with this view that in this unit we will discuss about all stages of concrete making and list out points which require attention of the supervisors to ensure proper quality control.
Objectives
After studying this unit, you should be able to:
- understand the role of concrete materials and equipment in concrete making,
- explain the care to be taken while placing reinforcement and erecting formwork,
- understand the checks to be carried out at every stage of concrete making for different types of concrete, and
- explain the purpose of quality control and testing in concrete construction.
Brick and concrete construction is the primary construction method in South America as well. I had the opportunity to help with some local construction jobs while visiting Brazil. There it is as normal to make a house out of concrete as it is for someone in the US to expect one made of wood, and vice-versa. It is interesting to see how such vast differences can be so easily overlooked!
