In the previous unit, you learnt about the site planning and were introduced to site organisation. Once a site has been so identified for constructional and the design has been completed adequately by the architectonics, the construction work is awarded Lo a contractor. The initial phase of construction involves mobilizations including site clearance and organisation is then followed by the actual construction. all these I construction activities starting site planning, site clearance and site organisation to those of construction implementation, have one aspect nonunion and that pertains to requirement of reading and interpretation the drawings received front the design office. Therefore, in this section, you will study the preparation and interpretation of different types of drawings. Drawing can be defined as the language the engineer and the architect. You can understand the construction drawings by interpreting both the graphic language and the written text accompanying it. The graphic language js composed of pictorial and multi-view drawings. These drawings are prepared at various scales and use architectural symbols to convey information relating to size, shape and materials to be used in construction.
In this unit, working drawings, and architectural symbols will be explained to you. The method of reading simple plans will be explained. An introduction to computer aided design and drafting is also included.
Objectives
This unit will help you to-develop a clear idea of the importance of drawings in construction. studying this unit, you should be able to
- distinguish between pictorial drawing and multivitamin drawing,
- use proper architectural symbols is your work,
- choose proper scale for your drawings,
- interpret and understand plans, sections and elevations,
- distinguish b&ween dimple and specialized drawings, and
- appreciate the scope of computers for design and drafting.
